Costessey Sports underdogs who upset the formbook to lift one of the local Sunday soccer scene's premier prizes have been urged to set their sights even higher.

After watching his young braves win the Pink Un League Cup, manager Malcolm Armstrong told them to make a Carrow Road outing their next goal.

“I said to them that if you can win this cup then you can get to Carrow Road in the Norfolk Sunday Senior Cup,” said a proud Armstrong, after the 2-1 win over Norwich Busmen at Wroxham.

Despite suffering a leg amputation nightmare last season Armstrong steered Costessey Sports to Intermediate Cup final success in only their third season of adult competition. However he was left with a major rebuilding job this term when several players left to join Busmen.

But the new-look side punched well above its weight throughout the League Cup campaign claiming the prize scalps of Dog House and Norman Wanderers, who finished third and second in the Premier Division this season.

They also beat Division 1b champions Wymondham Rangers after earning a semi-final place in controversial circumstances.

Premier Division outfit the Grove, who had beaten them 4-3 in the quarter-finals, were booted out of the contest for fielding a player registered with another ENNSL club. The displays highlighted the potential in the team and Armstrong is hoping he can keep the players out of the clutches of the leading clubs.

“I expect to have to battle to hang on to some of my better players,” he said. “I have got a team that can beat any team on their day.

“We attack teams non-stop, even though that can cause problems some time at the back. The aim next season is to get promoted and get to Carrow Road.”

In an open and entertaining final at Trafford Park, Costessey enjoyed the best possible start when Scott Woodgate scored within 30 seconds of kick-off. Young midfielder Liam Jones, 16, made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, much to the delight of his father Glen, who was playing right behind him at full back.

David Tayler put Busmen's comeback into gear after 63 minutes. But although there were chances at both ends the defences held firm and it was Costessey captain Matthew Bradley who received the cup from league life president Ray Kiddell.

The triumph was another boost for local soccer stalwart Armstrong in his battle to recover from having a leg amputated below the knee last season after suffering diabetes-related circulation problems caused gangrene to set in.

Armstrong, 59, had a false leg fitted in October and is trialling it by taking a penalty against his team's goalkeeper in the pre-match warm-up before every game.

Sunday's Trafford Park audience may well have noticed his latest effort.

“I got within eight inches of the goal. So I'm getting closer,” said the former referee and player who won the league cup with the legendary Loke United team in 1975.

“There's nothing in particular riding on the penalty kicks, other than embarassment for the goalkeeper if I score,” he laughed.
