(Click OK when prompted) Costessey Sports underdogs who upset the formbook to lift one of the local Sunday soccer scene's premier prizes have been urged to set their sights even higher.
After watching his young braves win the Pink Un League Cup, manager Malcolm Armstrong told them to make a Carrow Road outing their next goal.
“I said to them that if you can win this cup then you can get to Carrow Road in the Norfolk Sunday Senior Cup,” said a proud Armstrong, after the 2-1 win over Norwich Busmen at Wroxham.
Despite suffering a leg amputation nightmare last season Armstrong steered Costessey Sports to Intermediate Cup final success in only their third season of adult competition. However he was left with a major rebuilding job this term when several players left to join Busmen.
But the new-look side punched well above its weight throughout the League Cup campaign claiming the prize scalps of Dog House and Norman Wanderers, who finished third and second in the Premier Division this season.
They also beat Division 1b champions Wymondham Rangers after earning a semi-final place in controversial circumstances.
Premier Division outfit the Grove, who had beaten them 4-3 in the quarter-finals, were booted out of the contest for fielding a player registered with another ENNSL club. The displays highlighted the potential in the team and Armstrong is hoping he can keep the players out of the clutches of the leading clubs.
“I expect to have to battle to hang on to some of my better players,” he said. “I have got a team that can beat any team on their day.
